The Nao D53 includes tatami mats (compressed rice straw covered in rush grass) built into a low wooden platform. Traditional modern style - designed for use with a futon rather than a Western mattress. Tatami needs to be aired regularly and kept dry. The grass surface has a distinctive smell that fades over time. Custom sizes to fit Japanese futon dimensions. Not recommended for humid environments without good AC. This bespoke bed features handcrafted European construction, with fast delivery and warranty across Riyadh, KSA.

Authentic Japan: The Tatami Sleeping Experience

With Tatami Panels

The Nao D53 includes actual tatami mats in the platform. Rush grass, woven in Japan. They have a distinctive grassy smell when new. Some people love it, others find it takes getting used to. The smell fades after a few months.

Tatami has practical benefits. It stays cooler than solid surfaces in summer and warmer in winter. Breathes better than plywood. In Riyadh's climate that's relevant. The mats do need care though: avoid water, vacuum regularly, flip them occasionally.

The bed takes Western-size mattresses. The frame dimensions are adjusted from traditional Japanese proportions. So you're getting the tatami element without needing special bedding. Good for people who like modern aesthetics but don't want to change their whole sleep setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Traditional tatami mats have compressed rice straw core with woven rush grass (igusa) covering. The rush grass is natural antiseptic and provides the distinctive tatami fragrance. Our D53 uses authentic Japanese tatami - not synthetic imitations.

Tatami is firm - very different from soft mattresses! Most users require 2-3 week adjustment period. Once adapted, many prefer tatami's support. Combine tatami platform with thin futon (5-8cm) for authentic Japanese experience. Not for everyone - definitely try before committing!

Quality tatami lasts 5-7 years with proper care. Rush grass gradually fades from green to amber - natural aging considered beautiful in Japanese culture. Mats can be flipped for extended life. We offer tatami replacement service sourced from our Japanese partners.

Tatami performs well in dry Saudi climate! The natural materials resist mold (common in humid Japan). However, tatami needs some humidity - maintain 40-50% with AC for optimal mat health. The natural materials actually help regulate sleeping temperature.

Defeats the authentic tatami purpose! The D53 is designed for traditional thin futons. Regular mattresses are too heavy and prevent tatami from breathing. If you want regular mattress, consider the D52 (Japanese platform without tatami mats).

Vacuum weekly along the grain (rush grass has directional weave). Wipe with barely damp cloth - never wet. Sunlight exposure quarterly prevents moisture accumulation. No shoes on tatami! The natural materials are delicate but with proper care last many years.
